Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology is first offered at the Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology in 1986 and later has been placed under the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (FBSB) that was established on 1 August 2004. Under FBSB, the name of the program has been changed to Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology with Honors and offered by the Department of Bioprocess Technology. The program is conducted on a full-time basis at the campus of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang. The duration of the program is eight semesters (four years) with a minimum credit of 126 to graduate.

This program is conducted using a student-centered learning (SCL) method that includes theories and practices through lectures, tutorials, seminars, industrial training, field trips, case studies, fieldwork and research projects.

Curriculum Structure

The program curriculum structure is structured based on the components and guidelines set by the Program Standards Biotechnology. Students need to complete a minimum of 126 credits to graduate.

The courses offered in the program are divided into six (6) main components namely fundamental sciences, core components: core sciences and applied, specialization elective, final year research project, industrial training, and generic skills, humanities and liberal arts.

Fundamental SciencesFundamental sciences component (13 credits) is basic courses in biotechnology such as biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, especially statistics.

Core:

Core Sciences and AppliedCore component courses: core sciences and applied (57 credits) are set in the program to achieve sufficient skill levels in biotechnology studies.

Specialization ElectiveSpecialized elective courses (20 credits) encompass various biotechnology elective courses such as industrial biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, animal and plant biotechnology, and food biotechnology.
